Germany

Casinos
and gambling hall'. are very popular in Germany. Thi
gambling halls (Spielhallen) are primarily slot-machine
casino The main game is Roulette, as in all European
casinos. Fortu-nately, Blackjack is played in a number
of the larger casinos, such as the Kurhaus in Baden-Baden
and the casinos in Lindau and Konstanz.
There
are a number of unique features of German Blackjack.
At the Kurhaus, there is an admission charge with
a sliding scale 'depending upon how many days you
plan to gamble. The more r days you play, the less
the per-day cost. The Kurhaus is on the > formal
side, with coat and tie required. The casino also
refuses to :deal a game to less than three players.
If the third player drops out, the game is halted
until another player is found. This rarely proves
to be a problem in the evenings, but weekday-afternoon
games can be difficult to find. Also, you will never
have the most advantageous situation: head-on play
against the dealer.

The
mechanics of the game are also slightly different.
Instead of the hand signals preferred in the United
States, the Germans play a "loud" game.
Hits are requested by saying Karte (sounds like "card"),
and standing is indicated by saying raeste ("rest"
will get you by). All bets must be made in multiples
of the minimum ten Deutsche mark (DM), which is somewhere
between while. All cards are dealt face up out of
a shoe, and the deater doesn't take a hole card. This
is similar to the British style be-cause the dealer
keeps any additional bets made, like doubling down
or splitting, when he deals himself a Blackjack. So
as in British casinos, you have to be extremely cautious
when playing against a dealer Ace or 10 up.
