Another unusual Kurhaus rule is observer betting. An observer can bet any amount within the table limits on your hand if he so chooses. It can be extremely uncomfortable when making a bor-derline decision that will affect several bettors with 100 DM on your hand. Another risk of German Blackjack is sitting in the third-base position. It is a common superstition among French and German players to expect the third-base player to "control" the dealer for the betterment of the table.

The third-base player is supposed to hit for cards that would help the dealer and stand to leave the dealer busting cards. As you can imagine, there is no way an hon est player, even a Hi-Opt I card counter, could know exactly what cards are going to the dealer. And as we've shown, it doesn't make any difference anyway. Nonetheless, do yourself a favor and avoid this hot seat in Germany.
